Description

Offering a rare late 19th-century antique 5-inch carpenter square in rosewood and brass, made by Disston & Morss. Measuring 5-3/8 inches by 3-5/8 inches, with a handle 1/2 inch thick, this square is a true collector's piece. The blade is in good condition with minor pitting, while the handle remains in great shape. Detailed photos are available to help you assess its condition. Stamped with "DISSTON & MORSS PHILA WARRANTED" and made in Philadelphia, this piece also features the name "J. Heroux" etched into the handle, presumably the original owner. Though Disston is more well-known for hand saws, they also produced a variety of other tools in the late 1800s. Here's a bit of history on Disston & Morss: Disston & Morss gauges were marked prior to around 1900. Joab Morss partnered with Henry Disston from 1867 until Morss's death in 1879. Afterward, Disston & Morss became a division of H. Disston & Sons until about 1900, when it was integrated into the main company. This division produced gauges, levels, bevels, squares, and other measuring tools. From 1900 to 1913, gauges featured flat thumbscrews similar to Stanley gauges, while from around 1914 onward, they had flat-topped thumbscrews with knurled edges. Fast shipping available.
